LIBERDADE DE EXPRESSÃO, CENSURA E LIMITES DA ARTE.

Em 2017, os artistas Elisabete Finger, Maikon K, Renata Carvalho e Wagner Schwartz foram objeto de acalorados debates em torno da liberdade de expressão, censura e limites na arte. Wagner, em sua performance La Bête, oferece seu corpo nu para ser dobrado e desdobrado pelo público – revisitando a proposta das esculturas Bichos, de Lygia Clark. Em sua apresentação no Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo o performer foi tocado por uma criança, acompanhada por sua mãe. Um recorte em vídeo deste momento foi manipulado por grupos conservadores e viralizado nas redes sociais, atribuindo ao artista o título de “pedófilo”. Elisabete, coreógrafa e mãe da criança que participou de La Bête, sofreu uma avalanche de acusações e ameaças, em meio a inquéritos policiais e interrogatórios políticos, que colocaram em questão o papel da mulher, da mãe, do público e da artista no Brasil de hoje. Maikon, em sua performance DNA de DAN, fica nu e imóvel dentro de uma bolha transparente. Na apresentação em frente ao Museu Nacional da República, em Brasília, teve seu cenário danificado e foi detido pela polícia militar sob a acusação de ato obsceno. Renata, atriz, teve sua peça – O Evangelho Segundo Jesus, Rainha do Céu – censurada, e foi impedida de se apresentar por ser travesti e interpretar Jesus Cristo.

Em Domínio Público, os quatro se juntam para uma reflexão a partir dos ataques sofridos. Tomando como ponto de partida um dos ícones da história da arte, revelam como uma obra pode ser utilizada em diferentes narrativas ao longo do tempo, incitando as mais diversas reações, espelhando os fatos e absurdos de nossas sociedades.

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, CENSORSHIP AND LIMITS IN ART.

In 2017, artists Elisabete Finger, Maikon K, Renata Carvalho and Wagner Schwartz were the subject of heated debates on freedom of expression, censorship and limits in art. In his performance La Bête, Wagner offers his naked body to be bent and spread open by the public – revisiting the proposal of the sculptures in the work Bichos by Lygia Clark. In his presentation at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art the performer was touched by a child, who was accompanied by their mother. A video clip of this moment was manipulated by conservative groups and went viral on social networks, giving the artist the title of “pedophile.” Elisabete, choreographer and mother of the child who participated in La Bête, has suffered an avalanche of accusations and threats amidst police inquiries and political interrogations that have questioned the role of women, mothers, audiences and artists in Brazil today. In his performance DNA of DAN, Maikon stands naked and motionless inside a transparent bubble. In his presentation in front of the National Museum of the Republic in Braíslia, his scenery was damaged and he was detained by the military police on charges of an obscene act. Renata, an actress, had her play – The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven – censored, and was prevented from presenting herself as a transvestite and interpreting Jesus Christ.

In Public Domain, the four artists gather for a reflection based on the attacks they suffered. Taking one of the icons of art history as a starting point, they reveal how a work of art can be used in different narratives throughout the ages, inciting the most diverse reactions, and mirroring the facts and absurdities of our societies.
